45,000 American deaths associated with lack of insurance A freelance cameraman's appendix ruptured and by the time he was admitted to surgery, it was too late. A self-employed mother of two is found dead in bed from undiagnosed heart disease. A 26-year-old aspiring fashion designer collapsed in her bathroom after feeling unusually fatigued for days. What all three of these people have in common is that they experienced symptoms, but didn't seek care because they were uninsured and they worried about the hospital expense, according to their families. All three died. Research released this week in the American Journal of Public Health estimates that 45,000 deaths per year in the United States are associated with the lack of health insurance. If a person is uninsured, "it means you're at mortal risk," said one of the authors, Dr. David Himmelstein, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Paul Hannum's family members say he probably would've gone to the hospital earlier if he had had health insurance. P.S. We will overcome one day. That is all we can say in shame for not doing anything about this wicked travesty earlier. Should have gotten a real job. I aspired to be a concert violinist. But because I knew it was a long shot, I opted to get a college education that led to a decent job with health benefits. I made my choice. They made theirs. We all can't have the same or equal opportunities and/or advantages. Such is life.

Suck up and deal. I have no health insurance but you would never hear me whining about it. Why dont I like the idea of being insured one day on the "public option". ? Because I dont want larger govermnet creating a massive debt to our already out of control spending government.

I love when liberals give statistics like that to cause knee-jerk reactions. How many people die each year from automobiles? About 45,000. Maybe the government should force all automobiles off the road too, huh?

I've been denied health care. I'm 25 and white. I went to the ER and they said I needed tests, but they weren't tests the ER could run...so they sent me home with a bill and unknown problems... I need to see an endochronologist or something like that, but they won't let me see one without a large amount of cash to run tests..working the job I am 50 hours a week I can't afford it. :( I can only hope it's not something too bad.

Conservatives would tell them to "get a job and be responsible for yourself!"...even though the conditions that created that scenario have nothing to do with a job (denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition or they lost their job recently and couldn't afford coverage) or them being irresponsible. Therein lies the rub...and the shame of the Republican Party.

That's very false and bias data. You might end up with a bill you can't pay but if you go to the ER they will treat you. People who refuse to get help because they think they need insurance for it are cases for Darwin, not socialized health care. It's not the governments responsability to provide health care. What's next, food? Then what, transportation? Then what, cable TV? That's simply not the American way. If that's what you want, move to a socialist country.

And what do you say to the woman in England who lost her 21 week old baby who was only a few days shy of 22 weeks when the hospital told her that they did not have to help because the baby wasn't 22 weeks old. The rules the government set were to help preemies that were only 22 weeks old and no younger.

We should tell these families that nomatter what they will get a public option.

Not to be mean but nothing is free. Insurance is a business. Their goal is to make money. If we make health care "free" then that money comes from the tax payers. What do you say to the 160,000,000 who are going to be taxed more that aren't going to benifit from this?

Well, first of all, everyone dies, whether they have health insurance or not. If people don't visit a doctor, is that the fault of the Government, or society, or the insurance industry? No, at some point, it is their fault. If they want help with health care, why not go to their local church? It's worked for me, someone who is uninsured, and, like everyone else before me, someone who will eventually die.

I am sorry for your loss, but it is not my responsibility to insure you or anyone else. I provide for mine and my family' needs. You are responsible for you and yours. It is very easy to cite a statistic without corresponding evidence as to whether going to the doctor early would have prevented fatality. Whether even with insurance these people would have gone to the doctor at the first sign or would have waited to see if it cleared itself up. Or even the most basic statistic of how many die every year that have insurance.

The US has a much higher survival rate for cancer than socialized health care systems. For example the US is about 20% higher than the British health care system. About 575,000 Americans will die this year from cancer. You would have us increase that number by 20%. Just from increased cancer deaths, 115,000 additional Americans would die this year under Obama care. And there are similar differences in disease and accident survival rates.

If Jerry Lewis can raise BILLION DOLLARS for children with disability... Why can't those 45,000 people go out and do fundraising event? Instead of blaming everybody, feeling sorry for yourself.

The US medical system is rooted on so many levels. Health care for all won't be the only way you can fix it. It will still be far more expensive than any other system in the world. You need more doctors, more efficient hospitals, lower malpractice payouts, lower use of expensive pharmaceuticals, amongst many other things. You guys are in deep poo and should have fixed this system years ago. It is going to take you a LONG time to fix this mess you all have gotten yourselves in to. Is the US the only OECD country that doesn't have basic public health care?

No hospital in this country denies anyone health care because of their inability to pay. They could have chosen care and been put on a payment plan or had Medicare pay for it. We pay BILLIONS in health care every year for illegals, don't you dare try to say we wouldn't do the same for our own.

1st prove that the lack of Health Insurance was directly responsible for these alleged deaths. Now here's something really interesting. #1 You can't prove these deaths are related to a lack of Insurance and #2 You can't even prove that 45,000 actually died.

Is it just possible that some and yes I said some not all of these people would have qualified for some assistance through their state and had not applied, I know it happens, in fact that is part of the NOW changed number the administration is saying that don't have health insurance.

If your number is correct, then we should not have many uninsured left now , should we? Here is what I would say, " I am sorry for your loss. I am sorry that you did not make insurance and health care a priority. I am sorry that you did not take advantage of one of the the thousand free health clinics and hospitals. I am sorry that you did not take advantage of the four dollar prescriptions, free samples doctors give, or charity plans of churches and drug companies. I am sorry that you did not have fifty dollars to see a doctor. I can't help but wonder what could have been so important that you could not find a way to get the care you needed.

Where's your proof that these uninsured people (from the tearjerker article) couldn't get coverage and that if they had coverage/treatment that they still would have died? Hospitals never turn people away. How many of them CHOSE not to get coverage since they would rather spend their money on other things? The article is misleading and trying to get people's emotions working. Sorry but a huge chunk of the "uninsured" in America are either illegal aliens or they CHOOSE not to get coverage. The statement that these people are "at mortal risk" is ludicrous! Sure, everyone knows we need reform but Obama-care ain't it!

They should not buy new cars, large plasma tvs, iPhones, etc and expect someone else to pay their insurance for them.

They should have taken better care of themselves. It's not anyone's responsibility but their own.

The "45,000 deaths per year" is a "guess", not "fact".
